QR codes around the world: one symbol, many dialects

The symbol is identical worldwide; the payload is not. India's UPI, Brazil's PIX, China's WeChat Pay and Alipay, Southeast Asia's EMVCo national schemes and Europe's EPC transfer format all put different data inside the same square. Knowing which ecosystem your audience lives in decides which QR code to generate.

One standard, many dialects

Every QR code on earth uses the same ISO/IEC 18004 symbology, a scanner in São Paulo decodes a Tokyo code perfectly. What differs by region is the payload: the text inside the square, and the apps expecting it. Payments drove this divergence, because each country's payment rails defined their own format and a code from the wrong dialect is just gibberish to the local app.

The map

Region Scheme Payload style Scale and notes
India UPI (NPCI) upi://pay?... deep link Passed 10 billion transactions/month in 2023; format details
Brazil PIX (central bank) EMVCo merchant string with CRC16 Launched Nov 2020; instant transfers, format details
China WeChat Pay, Alipay Proprietary URLs into each app The original payment leapfrog; largely closed loop
Thailand PromptPay EMVCo National standard
Indonesia QRIS EMVCo One mandated code for all wallets
Malaysia DuitNow EMVCo Cross-border links with neighbours
Singapore PayNow / SGQR EMVCo Unified merchant label
Vietnam VietQR EMVCo Bank-transfer based
Europe EPC QR "Girocode" Structured text block for SEPA transfers Invoice payments; plus the Swiss QR bill
Japan Origin country; JPQR unification effort Mixed Codes everywhere since the 2000s, payments fragmented later

Two families dominate. EMVCo merchant-presented QR is the closest thing to a world payment dialect: Brazil and most of Southeast Asia built national schemes on it, each with local fields, which is why they interoperate imperfectly but resemble each other. Deep-link schemes like UPI ride the URL convention instead. Europe's EPC format is a third pattern: not a payment initiation rail but a structured credit-transfer form the banking app fills in. The full technical comparison is at QR payment standards compared.

Beyond payments, the dialects continue

  • Retail packaging is converging on GS1 Digital Link globally under Sunrise 2027, a rare case of one worldwide payload dialect.
  • Transport splits by symbology, not just payload: much of European rail and aviation uses Aztec codes where you might expect QR.
  • China runs QR deepest into daily life (ordering, identity, transit), but largely inside WeChat and Alipay's closed ecosystems rather than the open web.
  • Why Asia led by a decade is its own story, told in why QR took off in Asia first.

The practical consequence

Generate for the dialect, not just the format. A UPI code is useless in Brazil; a PIX code means nothing in Berlin, where an EPC code on the invoice is what the banking app expects. UseQR's typed generators build each payload to its actual specification, so the choice of tool is the choice of dialect. For non-payment content: a plain URL: the whole world reads it the same way, which is precisely why the URL remains the universal payload.

FAQ

Are QR codes the same in every country?

The symbol is: ISO/IEC 18004 everywhere, so any camera can decode any code. The payload inside differs by region, especially for payments, where each country's apps expect their own format.

Which country uses QR codes the most?

China embeds them deepest in daily life through WeChat and Alipay, while India's UPI processes the largest published transaction volumes, over ten billion a month per NPCI. Brazil and Southeast Asia follow close behind.

Can I use the same QR code internationally?

For URLs and general content, yes: the web is the universal payload. For payments, no: a UPI code works only with Indian UPI apps, PIX only in Brazil, and EPC codes only in SEPA banking apps.

What is the most common QR payment standard?

EMVCo's merchant-presented format is the widest base, underlying PIX, QRIS, PromptPay, DuitNow, PayNow and VietQR. India's UPI uses its own deep-link scheme at the largest single-country scale.
