QR code adoption statistics: what is actually known
Treat most QR statistics with suspicion, because they come from dynamic-QR vendors measuring only their own codes. The verifiable anchors are structural. Every iPhone and Android phone has scanned natively since 2017-2018, India's UPI passed 10 billion transactions a month in 2023, and retail point of sale standardises on 2D codes under GS1 Sunrise 2027.
Why most QR statistics are unreliable
Nearly every "QR code statistics" article online is sourced from companies that sell dynamic QR subscriptions. Their numbers describe growth of their platforms, not of the format: a vendor reporting "scans up 300%" is reporting its own customer acquisition. Static codes (the majority of codes in the world) phone home to nobody and appear in no one's dashboard. On top of that, small consumer surveys get laundered through years of republication into unsourced claims like "83% of shoppers…" with no population, date or methodology attached.
A useful filter: who counted, how, and do they sell the thing being counted? If a statistic cannot answer all three, discard it.
The numbers that survive scrutiny
These are structural facts: published by standards bodies, operating systems and central banks rather than by QR vendors.

The payment figures are the only large-scale scan-adjacent numbers with a trustworthy counter behind them: NPCI and the Banco Central do Brasil publish transaction volumes monthly because they operate the rails. Both systems are QR-first in practice, and both operate at a scale (billions of transactions a month) that dwarfs every Western marketing deployment combined. What the structural facts imply
You do not need survey percentages to establish adoption:
- Capability is effectively universal. Every iPhone since 2017 and virtually every Android since 2018 scans natively. "Can your audience scan?" stopped being a real question years ago; "will they bother?" is the real one, and that depends on your offer: see what scan rate should you expect.
