# QR code adoption statistics: what is actually known

> Treat most QR statistics with suspicion, because they come from dynamic-QR vendors measuring only their own codes. The verifiable anchors are structural. Every iPhone and Android phone has scanned natively since 2017-2018, India's UPI passed 10 billion transactions a month in 2023, and retail point of sale standardises on 2D codes under GS1 Sunrise 2027.

## Why most QR statistics are unreliable

Nearly every "QR code statistics" article online is sourced from companies that sell
dynamic QR subscriptions. Their numbers describe growth of *their platforms*, not of the
format: a vendor reporting "scans up 300%" is reporting its own customer acquisition.
Static codes (the majority of codes in the world) [phone home to nobody](/docs/basics/how-many-people-scan-qr-codes)
and appear in no one's dashboard. On top of that, small consumer surveys get laundered
through years of republication into unsourced claims like "83% of shoppers…" with no
population, date or methodology attached.

A useful filter: **who counted, how, and do they sell the thing being counted?** If a
statistic cannot answer all three, discard it.

## The numbers that survive scrutiny

These are structural facts: published by standards bodies, operating systems and central
banks rather than by QR vendors.

| Year | Fact | Source of record |
|---|---|---|
| 1994 | QR code released by Denso | Denso Wave |
| 2002 | First phone with a built-in QR reader (Sharp J-SH09, Japan) | manufacturer record |
| 2017 | iOS 11 adds native camera scanning (September) | Apple release notes |
| 2017–2018 | Android reaches parity via Google Lens and camera integration | Google |
| 2016 | UPI launches in India with QR as a core interface | NPCI |
| 2020 | PIX launches in Brazil (November) | Banco Central do Brasil |
| 2023 | UPI passes **10 billion transactions in a single month** (August) | NPCI published monthly data |
| 2027 | GS1 Sunrise 2027 target: retail point of sale accepts 2D codes | GS1 |

The payment figures are the only large-scale scan-adjacent numbers with a trustworthy
counter behind them: NPCI and the Banco Central do Brasil publish transaction volumes
monthly because they operate the rails. Both systems are QR-first in practice, and both
operate at a scale (billions of transactions a month) that dwarfs every Western marketing
deployment combined. The regional breakdown is on
[QR codes around the world](/docs/basics/qr-codes-around-the-world).

## What the structural facts imply

You do not need survey percentages to establish adoption:

- **Capability is effectively universal.** Every iPhone since 2017 and virtually every
Android since 2018 scans natively. "Can your audience scan?" stopped being a real
question years ago; "will they bother?" is the real one, and that depends on your offer:
see [what scan rate should you expect](/docs/marketing/what-scan-rate-should-you-expect).
- **Infrastructure is committing.** GS1's Sunrise 2027 and the EU Digital Product Passport
are decade-scale bets by retail and regulators, not marketing fashion.
- **Familiarity got a forced upgrade.** Pandemic menus and check-ins made scanning a
learned habit across age groups, covered in
  [QR codes after COVID](/docs/basics/qr-codes-after-covid).

## What UseQR can tell you: nothing, on purpose

UseQR generates static codes in your browser and keeps no record of what is made or
scanned. There is no analytics pipeline to publish statistics from, which is
[a privacy feature, not a gap](/docs/security/client-side-vs-server-side-qr-generation).
If you need scan counts for your own campaign, instrument the destination with
[UTM parameters](/glossary/utm-parameter) rather than trusting industry aggregates.

## FAQ

### How many QR codes are scanned each year?
No trustworthy global figure exists. Static codes leave no record when scanned, so every headline number is an extrapolation from one vendor's platform or a small survey. The only solid large-scale counts come from payment networks like UPI and PIX.

### Are QR code scans increasing?
The verifiable indicators say yes: payment networks built on QR report rising monthly volumes, native scanning has been standard on phones since 2017-2018, and retail is standardising on 2D codes for point of sale by 2027.

### What percentage of people scan QR codes?
Ignore precise percentages. They trace back to vendor surveys with unstated methodology. What is establishable: essentially all smartphones sold since 2018 can scan, and in QR-payment countries scanning is a daily habit for hundreds of millions of people.

### What is the most-used QR code application?
Payments, by a wide margin. India's UPI alone passed ten billion transactions in a month in 2023 per NPCI data, and Brazil's PIX operates at comparable national scale.
