QR code generator pricing compared: the five models and their traps

QR pricing follows five models: trial-then-expire (printed codes die when the trial does), per-code allowances, per-scan caps, ad-supported scanning, and metered edits. Managed redirects, analytics and governance legitimately cost money; static code generation does not: it is milliseconds of client-side arithmetic, and free static with no strings is the baseline to demand.

The five pricing models

Every QR vendor's pricing page reduces to one of five models, and knowing which one you are looking at predicts your future problems better than the feature list does.

1. Trial-then-expire. No real free tier: a 7–14 day trial, after which your codes deactivate. QRFY (7 days, then codes are held pending a ~$117/quarter minimum, monthly billing removed), qr-code-generator.com and Scanova (14 days each). The trap is timing: the trial expires after you have printed. QRCG's 1.5–1.9★ Trustpilot rating is built almost entirely from this mechanism. Scanova adds a data angle: on lapse, codes deactivate and data is deleted after 26 months.

2. Per-code allowance. A free tier of 2–3 codes, paid tiers unlocking more: QRCodeKIT (2 for life), Flowcode (2), Bitly (2 per month, with destinations not editable on free, removing the point of a dynamic code), QR Tiger (3). Reasonable in principle; check what else rides along.

3. Per-scan caps. The code works until people use it. QR Tiger's free codes die at 500 scans; Flowcode's analytics stop at 500 scans. A scan cap is a kill switch wired to your campaign's success.

4. Ad-supported. ME-QR offers "unlimited free" dynamic codes with an ad interstitial on every scan; removing ads costs $5.75/mo, per code. Your customers pay with their time, indefinitely.

5. Metered edits. Bitly meters the edits themselves: 5 to 110 redirect changes per month by tier ($120–2,388/yr). The defining feature of a dynamic code, sold by the unit.

Add the recurring add-ons: custom domains from a $7/mo tier (QR Tiger) to $2,000/yr (Uniqode); annual-only billing (Uniqode, and QRFY removed monthly); analytics retention sold in tiers. The hidden-costs page covers the non-price costs these models generate.

What should cost money: a framework

Strip the packaging and QR products sell four things with genuinely different cost structures:

What Marginal cost to provider Fair to charge?
Generating a static code Milliseconds of arithmetic, can run in your browser No: free is the baseline
Running a managed redirect Real but tiny (~fractions of a cent per thousand scans) Yes, modestly
Analytics storage + dashboard Real: storage, queries, UI Yes
Governance (SSO, audit, SOC 2) Real and substantial Yes: this is what enterprise pricing is for

The market's persistent trick is charging row-four prices for row-one goods: static codes behind signups, watermarks and caps. Who funds the genuinely free tools is a fair question with a checkable answer: who pays when a QR code is free; UseQR's answer is on /free-forever. Whether the rows you actually need justify a subscription is the worth-it question.

FAQ

How much does a QR code cost?

A static QR code costs nothing: generation is trivial arithmetic and good free tools impose no limits. Paid plans, typically $5–150 monthly, price managed redirects, analytics dashboards and enterprise governance, not the code.

Why do some QR codes stop working unless you pay?

Because they are dynamic: the code points at the vendor's redirect, and the vendor switches it off when a trial or subscription ends. The printed pattern is fine; the service behind it is the product being withheld.

What is a fair price for dynamic QR codes?

Judge by the components: a redirect costs the vendor fractions of a cent per thousand scans, analytics and dashboards cost real money, governance costs the most. Be wary of scan caps, metered edits and annual-only billing regardless of headline price.

Are free QR code trials safe to use?

Safe to explore, dangerous to print from. Trial codes are dynamic and deactivate when the trial ends, after your material is distributed. Never print a code from a trial account unless you have confirmed in writing what happens at expiry.
