QR codes for home care
Home care runs on a laminated card in the client's folder: an opaque-token link to the care plan, a visit check-in code that timestamps arrival, and a family-portal code. No names or conditions ever go in a payload, and every code needs the client's consent to be there.
The workplace is someone's living room
Home care is a distributed workforce with no office walls: dozens of carers, hundreds of homes, paper folders that drift out of date. QR codes help precisely because they are paper-compatible, but the setting imposes two rules before any pattern:
- Consent: every code placed in a person's home is placed with their agreement.
- Dignity: codes live inside the care folder, on a laminated card, never stickered onto furniture, doors or equipment as if the home were a warehouse.
The care-plan card
A laminated card in the folder carries a code resolving an opaque token, a random identifier the agency's authenticated system maps to the current care plan. The paper plan in the folder goes stale between visits; the token link is always current. Because the payload is meaningless without login, a visitor photographing the card learns nothing. Names, conditions and medication lists never enter a payload.
Visit check-in
The same card (or a second code) opens the agency's check-in form: the carer scans on arrival and departure, and the system timestamps the visit against that home's token. This is the low-cost alternative to dedicated telematics, no hardware in the home, no app beyond a camera, and an auditable record that commissioners increasingly require. Its honest limitation: a photographed code can be scanned from anywhere, so treat scan-based check-in as evidence, and combine it with the phone's location captured by the form if your policy needs proof of presence.
Family communication
A separate code in the folder for the family portal lets relatives (often remote, often anxious) see visit confirmations without ringing the office. Same token pattern, separate permissions.
Introducing carers
Rotating unfamiliar faces is frightening for clients. A vCard code on the agency's introduction sheet puts the office number into a relative's phone, and a phone payload sized large on the card gives the client themselves a one-tap call route. Print the number in large type beside it: the code supplements, the number is primary for this audience.
