What a dishwasher actually does to a print

Each cycle combines four attacks: water at 60–75 °C, strongly alkaline detergent (designed to dissolve organic films, which is chemically what most inks are), high- pressure spray abrasion, and a thermal shock on every heat-dry. One cycle does nothing visible. A mug in office rotation sees 200+ cycles a year, and the damage integrates: surface prints thin, lighten and finally patch away, and a QR code stops scanning at the "lighten" stage, when contrast crosses the decoder's threshold, well before the design looks destroyed.

Bare laser etching without infill has a different problem: it survives forever but may never have scanned, because frosted-on-glaze marks lack luminance contrast, the same physics as etched glass.

Reading a supplier's claims honestly

"Dishwasher safe" on a promotional mug usually describes the mug, not the print. Questions that separate marketing from specification: Is the decoration fired on? At what temperature? Is there a wash-cycle rating for the decoration itself? If the care instructions say "hand wash recommended", that is the supplier telling you the print will not survive, believe them. Cheap full-colour promo mugs are almost always sublimation or surface print; a fired single-colour decal costs more and is the only honest answer for a code that must scan for years of communal-kitchen service.

Design notes: fired decals render solid dark modules well, but keep modules at 0.8–1 mm or larger (decal firing softens fine edges), and check the payload fits at that size with the size calculator. Dark code on a light band, never inverted, with the full quiet zone inside the decoration area.

The 20-cycle test protocol

Before ordering hundreds of units, buy or sample one and run it through 20 consecutive dishwasher cycles, normal domestic programme, standard detergent, no hand-washing between. Then:

  1. Scan with two phones at ~20 cm under kitchen lighting.
  2. Compare side-by-side with an unwashed unit; visible lightening at 20 cycles predicts scan failure within the first year of real use.
  3. Confirm the decoded payload matches the artwork exactly, the habit from the print checklist.
