QR codes on fabric: what survives the weave
Fabric texture breaks fine detail: keep modules at 1.5–2 mm minimum on knits, around 1 mm on tight weaves, and use error correction Q or H. DTG printing holds detail best, heat-transfer vinyl is close behind, screen printing is coarsest. Place codes where the garment lies flat, because stretch distortion breaks codes that scanned in the studio.
Why the weave fights the grid
A QR module is a hard-edged square; a textile is a lattice of threads with gaps, fuzz and directionality. Ink lands on thread crowns, wicks along fibres, and drops into the gaps between yarns, so every printed edge becomes ragged at the scale of the thread pitch, typically 0.2–0.5 mm on garment fabrics. Once your module size approaches a few thread widths, the weave's texture competes with the code's structure and the decoder loses.

At a 2 mm module, a version 2 code (25 modules) plus quiet zone is a 6.6 cm square. Keep payloads short (a bare short URL, not a tracking-parameter train), and check the arithmetic with the size calculator.
Print methods ranked for QR detail
- Direct-to-garment (DTG). Inkjet onto pretreated fabric. Best edge definition of the garment processes and fine for 1.5 mm modules on smooth cotton jersey.
- Dye sublimation. Rivals DTG for sharpness, but only on light-coloured polyester: the dye becomes part of the fibre, so it also wins on wash durability.
- Heat-transfer vinyl (HTV). The code is cut or printed on a film, so edges are crisp and sit on top of the weave rather than in it. Good detail; the film's edges can lift after repeated washing.
- Screen printing. A thick ink deposit smooths the weave, but stencil resolution and ink spread make it the coarsest of the four. Use 2 mm modules and simple payloads.
Use error correction Q as a baseline, H on knits, and never invert, dark modules on a light garment panel. On dark garments, print the code inside a light rectangular patch rather than relying on an underbase halo.
Stretch is the failure nobody tests for
A knit stretches 5–10% in wear, more across the chest of a fitted shirt. Stretch is anisotropic: the code becomes a rectangle with wavy edges, and unlike curvature it varies moment to moment. A code that scanned perfectly on the press table can fail on the wearer.
Place codes where fabric stays flat and unstretched: the upper back yoke, a sleeve, the hem, or best of all a woven or printed label: labels are tight-woven, stable and effectively a hard surface. Test the finished garment on a body, not on the table.
Washing and lifetime
Every wash cycle abrades the print and lifts fibres through it. Expect DTG and screen prints to soften noticeably within 25–50 domestic washes; sublimation lasts the life of the fabric; HTV fails at the edges first. Contrast loss from fading compounds the texture problem, so a fabric code's scannability decays on two fronts, the honest advice for long-life garments is sublimation on polyester or a sewn-in label. Can a QR code be printed on fabric?
