QR codes in TV ads
TV QR codes work (Coinbase's 2022 Super Bowl ad, sixty seconds of a bouncing code, drove so much traffic the app buckled), but the physics are strict. At a typical 2.5–3 m viewing distance the code needs to be roughly a quarter of the screen wide and on screen for five seconds or more.
The Coinbase case, and both of its lessons
During the February 2022 Super Bowl, Coinbase aired sixty seconds of almost nothing: a QR code drifting around a black screen like the old DVD-player screensaver, changing colour as it bounced. No voiceover explaining, no product shots. Viewers scanned in such numbers that Coinbase's app and landing experience buckled under the traffic shortly after the ad aired, a failure the company itself acknowledged at the time.
Two lessons, and the second is as important as the first:
- TV QR codes work. An audience sitting at home with phones in hand will scan a screen, at scale, when given a reason (Coinbase's was a Bitcoin giveaway for new sign-ups). The oddity of the creative was the reason (curiosity), but the mechanism it proved is general.
- Load-plan the destination like a launch. A TV spot concentrates its response into minutes. The first hop should be a static page on a CDN (cacheable, no login, no app-store dependency), with the heavier experience one deliberate tap later. If the payoff requires your app, let the landing page absorb the spike and route people onward, rather than aiming the firehose at your signup flow.
The physics: size and duration
TV scanning obeys the same 10:1 distance rule as print. Sofa-to-screen distance is typically 2.5–3 m, so the code must be 25–30 cm wide on the panel. A 55-inch TV's picture is about 121 cm across: the code needs roughly a quarter of the screen width. Duration is the other axis. A viewer must notice the code, decide, find the phone, raise it and let it focus: under 5 seconds on screen is decoration, and end-frames of 8–10 seconds are the workable floor, reasoning at minimum on-screen duration. Second screens and the streaming advantage
The behaviour TV codes exploit already exists: sitting with a phone while watching TV is the default posture of a modern living room, so the gap between seeing and scanning is seconds, not a journey. Scanning a code off a screen works reliably, moiré and refresh artefacts rarely trouble modern cameras at TV sizes.
Streaming and connected-TV placements quietly remove the duration constraint entirely: a viewer can pause and scan at leisure. If your buy includes streaming inventory, the code can be smaller-but-persistent (a corner presence through the spot) rather than a giant end-frame: the paused frame is effectively a poster. Broadcast offers no pause; size and hold accordingly.
The checklist
- Destination: static, CDN-served, load-tested at spike volume, parameters tagged per spot or daypart with UTMs.
- Code: quarter of screen width, static, dark-on-light, quiet zone respected against busy footage.
- Duration: 8–10 s minimum on broadcast; persistent corner presence acceptable on pausable streaming.
- Fallback: a short spoken-and-shown URL for everyone who missed the window.
- Verify: decode the broadcast master's actual frames with the validator: compression can soften module edges.
