QR code placement in a layout
Place print QR codes bottom-right, where Western reading order ends and calls to action are expected. Keep the code out of gutters, folds and spines, at least 10 mm from any trim edge or fold, and give each visual zone at most one code with a label saying where it leads.
Bottom-right, by convention
Western readers traverse a page in a rough Z: headline, body, then the lower-right corner, which is why that corner is where calls to action conventionally live, and a QR code is a call to action. Placing the code bottom-right means the reader arrives at it having already absorbed the reason to scan. Pair it with a frame or CTA label and, on anything printed, a short URL fallback.
The convention bends for large formats: on a poster read across a room, the code's physical height on the wall matters more than its page position.
The danger zones
Placement kills more codes than styling does. Keep the code, including its full 4-module quiet zone, clear of:
- Folds. Ink cracks along fold lines and the paper never lies flat again. Keep the code ≥ 10 mm from any fold, and never let one cross it.
- Gutters and spines of bound documents, curvature plus shadow defeats flat-grid decoding.
- Trim edges. Cutters drift. Standard print safe areas are 3–5 mm; give the code ≥ 5 mm from trim beyond its quiet zone, and check the full bleed, trim and safe-area rules.
- Perforations, staple lines and die-cuts, for the same mechanical reasons.
- Busy imagery. A code needs its own calm patch of background; overlaying photography is its own failure mode, covered in QR codes on busy backgrounds.
Physical scan height
For wall-mounted pieces, put the centre of the code 120–160 cm from the floor, comfortable phone-raising height for most adults, standing. A code at the top of a 2 m poster forces people to shoot upward at an angle; one near the floor makes them crouch. Both add angle and shake exactly where margin is thinnest. Remember the size rule travels with placement: a code high on a wall is also further away, and the size calculator or the guidance in QR code size for a poster should get the final say.
On horizontal surfaces (tables, counters) codes are scanned from above at 30–50 cm and can be small; on shop windows, reflections and night lighting dominate, so favour eye-level placement away from glare sources.
One code per visual zone
A layout zone (a panel of a leaflet, a poster's footer, a menu page) gets at most one code. Two codes competing in the same visual field make scanners and humans both choose badly; the spacing rules, labelling requirements and the hub-code alternative are the subject of multiple QR codes on one page. If the layout seems to need three codes in one zone, the layout is usually the problem.

How far should a QR code be from the edge of a design?
At least 5 mm inside the trim line, in addition to the code's own four-module quiet zone. Cutting equipment drifts by a millimetre or two, and a shaved quiet zone is one of the commonest print failures.
Can a QR code go across a fold?
No. Folds crack ink, add shadow, and stop the paper lying flat, so the decoder never sees an intact grid. Keep codes at least 10 mm from any fold, and on a single panel of folded pieces.
Does QR code placement affect scan rates?
Yes, through mechanics rather than psychology: codes at comfortable height and distance, after the motivating content, with a clear label, remove reasons to give up. Codes near folds, high on walls, or unlabelled add friction at the exact moment of decision.
