## The honest arithmetic

The standard yard sign is **45 × 60 cm** (18 × 24 in). A car rolling past the kerb is
3–8 m away, and the [ten-to-one rule](/docs/print/the-10-to-1-distance-rule) prices that
at a **30–80 cm** code, the top of that range is bigger than the sign. This is the same
wall [billboards](/qr-codes-on/billboards) hit: moving readers at distance are not a QR
audience, and no layout trick changes the maths.

So design for the reader you can actually win: **someone who has stopped**. A person
standing at the kerb, 2–3 m from a sign set back on the lawn, needs a **20–30 cm** code,
which fits, if you let it be a third of the sign. Accept plainly that drivers will read
the headline and the phone number, and only pedestrians and stoppers will scan.

## Production: coroplast and sunlight

Yard signs are almost universally **coroplast** (corrugated polypropylene) with digital or
screen-printed ink. The board outlives the print: coroplast shrugs off rain for years,
while unprotected inks visibly fade within one to two seasons of direct sun. A faded code
loses contrast before it loses shape. It drifts below the **40% luminance-difference**
floor and stops scanning while still looking "fine" from the kerb. The mechanism is

- Solid **black** modules (carbon black is the most UV-stable common ink), on white board.
- UV-rated inks or an over-laminate for anything staying out longer than a season.
- Error correction **Q**: mud splash, staple shadows and partial fade are exactly the
  damage classes correction absorbs.
- Face the sign north or into shade where the choice exists; south-facing signs fade
  first.
