# QR codes for schools and universities

> Education QR codes work best on noticeboards, in printed handouts and on library shelving. The constraint most schools miss is that many students have no data allowance — so linked resources must be light, and a printed alternative must exist.

## Assume no data

A meaningful share of students have limited or no mobile data. Design accordingly:

- Keep linked pages **under 500 KB**, images optimised, no video autoplay.
- Provide school WiFi details on a [WiFi code](/wifi-qr-code) next to the resource code.
- Never make a QR code the only route to homework, safeguarding information or exam details.

## Worksheets

A code on a worksheet is scanned at 20–30 cm, so 2 cm is enough. Print the URL as text too —
half the copies will be photocopied, and photocopying degrades a small code quickly. If
worksheets are routinely photocopied, use a larger code with error correction Q.

## Safeguarding

Codes on public-facing school noticeboards can be covered with stickers by anyone. Check
external signage regularly, and prefer codes pointing at your own domain so a substituted
sticker is more obvious when the destination is read aloud.

## Library shelving

Shelf-end codes pointing at a subject guide, reading list or catalogue search work well and
are read at 30–50 cm, so 3–5 cm of code. Keep the URL stable — reading lists change, shelf
labels do not.
