# QR codes for food trucks

> A food truck needs three codes: a menu code sized for the queue, a payment code at the serving window, and a social code that answers the question a fixed shopfront never faces, where are you today. ## Size for the queue, not the counter

Customers scan while queueing, not at the hatch. Work from the
[size-by-distance table](/docs/reference/qr-code-size-by-distance-table), minimum code
width ≈ scan distance ÷ 10:

- Queue standing **2–3 m** back → **20–30 cm** menu code on the window or panel.
- Payment at the hatch, **30–50 cm** away → **3–5 cm**.
- Side-panel social code read from the pavement at **2–4 m** → **20–40 cm**.

## Full sun is the enemy

A truck trades outdoors in exactly the [glare conditions](/docs/print/qr-codes-on-glossy-surfaces-and-glare)
that kill scans:

- **Matt laminate only.** Gloss in direct sun is a mirror, and no error correction level
  recovers a reflection.
- **Mount codes on the outside of the glass.** A code taped inside the serving window is
  read through a reflective, often tinted layer, the most common food-truck placement
  mistake. Outside the glass, the phone camera sees ink, not reflections.

## Print beats screens

A tablet in the window fails twice: the screen washes out in daylight, and it draws power
that on many pitches comes from a generator. Laminated matt print

## The truck moves: the URL must not

Point the social code at a page you control and update in place: today's pitch, this
week's schedule, the order-ahead link. A static code [does not expire](/docs/basics/do-qr-codes-expire)
as long as its URL keeps resolving, so never encode a platform profile you might abandon,
encode your own link page and change what it lists.

## What goes wrong

- Glossy laminate that scans fine in the workshop and fails at noon on the pitch.
- A menu code pointing at a multi-megabyte PDF, loaded over congested event cellular.
- The payment code inside the window glass, unreadable through tint and reflection.
- A social code hard-encoding one platform's profile URL instead of your own page.

## FAQ

### What size should a QR code on a food truck be?

Divide the scan distance by ten. A menu code read from a queue 2–3 m back needs 20–30 cm.
A payment code at the hatch, read from 30–50 cm, needs only 3–5 cm. Undersized window
codes are the most common failure.

### Should a food truck menu QR code link to a PDF?

No. Event pitches run on congested cellular, and a multi-megabyte PDF can take a minute
to load for a customer standing in a queue. Link a lightweight mobile web page with the
menu as text, updated in place.

### How do customers find where my truck is today?

Put a social or link-hub code on the side of the truck pointing at a page you update with
each pitch. The printed code never changes; the page behind it does. Sized at 20–40 cm it
is scannable from the pavement.
