# QR codes for electronics brands

> Electronics QR codes carry the manual, warranty registration and support. The trap is the router paradox: a setup guide behind a QR code fails when the device being set up is what provides the internet. Keep first-run steps printed, and put the serial number in the support URL so forms arrive prefilled.

## The lifecycle set

| Code | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| [Manual](/docs/ecommerce/qr-code-for-product-manuals) | Quick-start card and device label | The full manual, searchable and updated, without the printing cost |
| [Warranty registration](/docs/ecommerce/qr-code-for-warranty-registration) | Inside the lid, on the quick-start card | Registration happens at the unboxing peak or never |
| Support | Device label, near the serial plate | Opens a ticket with the model already known |
| [Companion app](/app-download-qr-code) | Quick-start card | One code routing each phone to its own store |

## The router paradox

The [QR-instead-of-manual](/docs/ecommerce/qr-code-instead-of-a-printed-manual) move has
one hard limit in electronics: several product categories are scanned at exactly the
moment the customer has no internet. A router's setup guide, a mesh extender's
instructions, a smart hub's onboarding, if these live only behind a code, the customer
whose WiFi is down cannot reach them. The rule: **first-run setup stays printed** on the
quick-start card; the code carries everything after connectivity exists: full manual,
firmware notes, troubleshooting. This is the sharpest example of
[when not to use a QR code](/docs/basics/when-not-to-use-a-qr-code) as the only path.

## Put the serial in the URL

A support code printed identically on every unit sends the customer to a generic help
page. Printing per-unit codes (`support.example.com/t?m=RT500&sn=X1042…`) means the
ticket form arrives with model and serial prefilled, which removes the step customers
get wrong most often (reading the serial plate). Per-unit codes are a
[batch generation](/docs/how-to/how-to-make-qr-codes-in-bulk) job on the production
line, typically printed by the same label printer as the serial plate itself. Keep the
payload to model and serial, never customer data, since the label outlives the sale.

## Recycling depends on where the customer lives

WEEE-style rules mandate the crossed-out-bin mark on the product, but actual disposal
routes vary by country and municipality. A
[recycling code](/docs/ecommerce/qr-code-for-sustainability-and-recycling-info) that
resolves to location-aware guidance does what no printed panel can, and is a genuinely
better use of the code than a brand page.

## What goes wrong

- Setup instructions reachable only through the code on a networking product, the
  router paradox in production.
- The device-label code printed too small: on a **1 × 1 cm** label a URL-length payload
is unreadable; the label needs 1.5–2 cm or a shorter redirect.
- Warranty registration behind an account-creation wall, the code got them there; the
  form loses them.

## FAQ

### Should a product manual be replaced by a QR code?

Mostly yes: a hosted manual is searchable, translated and current. The exception is
first-run setup for products that provide or depend on connectivity: those steps stay
printed, because the customer scanning may be offline precisely because the product is
not yet working.

### Why put the serial number in a QR support code?

The support form arrives prefilled with model and serial, skipping the step where
customers mistype the plate. Each unit gets its own code, generated in bulk on the
production line: the marginal cost is zero once the label printer is set up.

### How small can a QR code on a device label be?

Hold the 10:1 rule (a label read at 20 cm needs 2 cm), and keep the payload short so the
module count stays low. Below about 1.5 cm, laser-etched or thermal-printed codes with
full URLs stop scanning reliably.
