## What actually degrades, in order

**1. UV fading.** Black pigment fades to grey, cutting the luminance difference the decoder
needs. South-facing (northern hemisphere) surfaces fade fastest. This is the first failure in
almost every outdoor deployment.

**2. Water ingress.** Water under a laminate edge lifts the print and clouds the surface.
Edges and corners fail first.

**3. Abrasion.** Wind-blown grit, cleaning, handling. Matt laminate resists better than gloss
because it is already textured.

**4. Biological growth.** Lichen and algae on shaded, damp surfaces reduce contrast and are
hard to remove without damaging the print.

## Specification for outdoor work

- Error correction **Q** minimum, **H** for anything exposed or expected to last years.
- **Matt UV overlaminate.** Gloss reflects sunlight straight into the camera, and outdoors
  the sun is the light source you cannot move.
- **Oversize by 20–30%** beyond the ten-to-one rule, so there is contrast margin as the
  print fades.
- **Mount at 1.4–1.6 m** and angled to shed water, 15–30° from vertical.
- **Avoid direct south-facing** placement where you can.
- **Round the corners** of applied labels — square corners lift first.

## Design for graceful failure

Print the destination as a **short, typeable URL** next to the code. When the code eventually
fades below threshold, the sign still works. This is the single cheapest piece of insurance
in outdoor QR work and almost nobody does it.

## Inspection

Put outdoor codes on a maintenance schedule. Scan them, do not just look at them — a code
can look fine and be below the contrast threshold for a phone camera in bright sun.
