# QR codes in cold storage and freezers

## Cold is not the problem: phase changes are

Ink, vinyl and toner do not mind −25 °C. What kills cold-chain scanning is water changing
state on and around the label. Every trip through the freezer door is a condensation event:
a cold surface meeting warm, humid dock air instantly grows a film of fog, which then
refreezes into frost inside. Frost scatters light, condensation blurs module edges, and a
layer of either can drop effective [contrast](/glossary/contrast-ratio) below the decoding
threshold on an otherwise perfect label.

The second killer strikes before the freezer door ever opens: **adhesive that never
bonded**, because the label was applied to a cold or frosty carton.

## Two temperatures on the datasheet: read both

Label adhesives quote a **minimum application temperature** (how cold the surface may be
when you stick the label on) and a **service temperature range** (what it tolerates
afterwards). They differ enormously, and the application number is the one operations miss:

A standard label applied at −18 °C looks attached, then drops off during transit as the
un-flowed adhesive gives up. Two fixes: buy freezer-grade adhesive, or (cheaper and often
sufficient) **label at ambient temperature before goods enter the freezer**, giving the
adhesive its 24-hour bond-building time in the warm.

## Print process for the cold chain

Direct thermal works at low temperatures and suits short-lived logistics labels; for
labels living months in a cold room, or passing through wash-down areas, choose thermal
transfer on synthetic stock: the decision logic is on

Add a matt laminate or top-coat: it stops frost bonding into the ink layer and lets staff
**wipe the label clear in one pass** without scratching it. Keep modules on whole printer
dots per [thermal printer practice](/docs/print/thermal-printer-qr-codes), and oversize,
modules at 1.5–2× your normal size plus **error correction H** buy tolerance for partial
frost that no other spec change delivers.

## Placement: edges, not faces

Frost forms fastest on the large flat faces where air circulates and radiant cooling is
strongest. Practical placement rules from cold-room operations:

- Put the code on the **carton edge or end panel near the door side** of the rack, not the
  broad top face.
- On freezer doors and fixed locations, label the **door frame or jamb** (slightly warmer
  and shielded), rather than the door face.
- Keep codes at scanning height and angled vertically; horizontal surfaces collect frost
  and drips.
- Duplicate critical codes on two faces of the carton, generated as pairs with the
  [bulk generator](/bulk): redundancy is cheap at print time.

## Scanning in the cold works both ways

The scanner fogs too: a phone or handheld carried from a warm office into a cold room
grows condensation on its **lens**, and every code looks blurry until it clears. Wipe the
lens, or keep scanners stationed inside the cold zone. For frosted labels, one firm wipe
with a gloved hand restores most scans; codes that fail after wiping should be checked
against the payload with the [validator](/validate): cold gets blamed for what is
sometimes just a bad label that shipped unverified.
