# QR code for a Discord invite

> Discord invite links expire after seven days by default: the single biggest trap for print. Before generating the code, create an invite set to never expire with unlimited uses, encode that URL, and prepare moderation for the join surge a physical drop produces. Test-scan the printed proof before distributing.

## The 7-day trap

A Discord invite created with default settings **expires after 7 days**. Print that link on flyers, stickers or event banners and the code starts returning "invite invalid" before most of the print run has even been handed out.

The code itself never expires: [static QR codes cannot](/docs/basics/do-qr-codes-expire), but the invite behind it can, and does, by default. Before you generate anything:

1. In the invite dialog, set **Expire after: Never** and **Max number of uses: No limit**.
2. Copy the resulting `discord.gg/…` link.
3. Encode it with the [URL generator](/url) and decode the final artwork with the [validator](/validate) to confirm the exact link survived design and export.

A second, quieter trap: an invite capped at, say, 100 uses dies at scan number 101. Caps make sense for controlled online sharing; they are poison on print.

## Which link to print

- **A standard permanent invite** (`discord.gg/` followed by an opaque code) works for every server.
- **A vanity URL** (`discord.gg/yourname`) is available to servers at higher boost tiers. It is better print: human-readable, typeable as a fallback line under the code, and memorable if the code fails.
- **Safest for long-lived print**: a path on your own domain (`yourdomain.com/discord`) redirecting to the current invite. Invites do get revoked, regenerated during raid clean-ups, or lost when the admin who created them leaves; a redirect you control means the print never dies. The pattern is covered in [how to change what a QR code points to](/docs/how-to/how-to-change-what-a-qr-code-points-to).

Note that any admin can revoke or regenerate invites. Decide who owns the printed link, write it down, and make "never revoke the print invite" a rule.

## Plan for the surge

A code in the physical world invites strangers, at unpredictable volume, including bad actors who found your flyer amusing. Before the drop:

- Set the server **verification level** so brand-new accounts cannot post instantly.
- Turn on **rules screening / onboarding** so joiners land in a welcome flow, not straight into general chat.
- Point the invite at a dedicated landing channel and staff the first days, first impressions decide whether an IRL joiner stays.

## Placement basics

Discord codes ride the same physics as any other: size at least one tenth of the scanning distance (a poster read from 2 m needs a 20 cm code: the [size calculator](/size-calculator) does the arithmetic), and a written reason next to the code. "Join 4,000 people talking about X" beats a bare code.

## FAQ

### Why did my Discord QR code stop working?
Almost certainly the invite expired (Discord invites default to a seven-day lifetime), or it hit a max-uses cap, or an admin revoked it. The QR code itself is fine; it still encodes the dead link. Recreate the invite with no expiry and no cap, and reprint.

### How do I make a permanent Discord invite for printing?
When creating the invite, set expiry to Never and max uses to No limit, then encode that discord.gg link. For long print runs, safer still is a redirect on your own domain pointing at the current invite, so you can swap invites without reprinting.

### Can I use a QR code for my Discord server at events?
Yes: banners, badges and table cards work well because attendees' phones are free to scan. Prepare the server first: verification level up, onboarding screening on, and a welcome channel staffed, because an event drop produces a surge of unfamiliar joiners.

### What should I write next to a Discord QR code?
What the server is and why to join now: the topic, the size, the thing that happens there weekly. Add the vanity URL as a typeable fallback line for anyone whose camera struggles.
