# How to make a QR code in PowerPoint

> Generate the code, download SVG (PowerPoint has supported SVG since 2016), and Insert → Pictures onto the slide. Size it by the room, not the slide: the code should be a tenth of the distance to the farthest scanner, shown for at least 15–20 seconds, one code per slide.

## 1. Generate and insert

Build the code (URL for a link, WiFi for venue internet, a
feedback form for the closing slide), and download **SVG**.
PowerPoint (2016 and later, including Microsoft 365) inserts SVG natively:
**Insert → Pictures → This Device**, pick the file. The code stays vector, so it renders
sharp whether the deck plays on a laptop or a 6-metre conference screen. On older
PowerPoint, insert a PNG generated at
[1000 px or more](/docs/how-to/how-to-make-a-high-resolution-qr-code).

Resize from **corner handles only** (a stretched code will not scan), and keep clear
space around it: the quiet zone, at least 4 modules, free of
text boxes and slide decoration.

## 2. Size it for the room, not the slide

This is where presentation codes die. The [10:1 rule](/docs/reference/qr-code-size-by-distance-table)
applies to the *displayed* code and the *farthest person you expect to scan*:

On a projected 2 m-wide slide, a code occupying a quarter of the width displays at 50 cm,
scannable to roughly 5 m. For a large hall, an honest conclusion follows: **the back rows
cannot scan any reasonable slide code**. Repeat the code on handouts, put a
[short URL beside it](/docs/design/qr-code-next-to-a-short-url-fallback) for people too
far away, or hold the code slide while people walk up. More on screen-distance maths in

## 3. Give people time

An audience needs to notice the code, raise a phone, focus and scan. That takes longer
than you think from the stage:

- **15–20 seconds minimum** on screen; more for big rooms
  ([minimum on-screen duration](/docs/design/minimum-on-screen-duration-for-a-qr-code)
  has the full reasoning).
- Announce it, "this code is on screen for a moment" outperforms silently flashing it.
- **One code per slide.** Two codes split attention and phones lock onto the wrong one.
  If you need several (deck download, feedback, social), give each its own slide or
  repeat them in a closing loop.

Bring the code back on the final slide and leave it up through the Q&A. That is when
most scans actually happen.

## 4. Contrast survives projectors; subtlety does not

Projectors wash out colour and compress contrast, and conference lighting makes it worse.
Stick to **near-black modules on a white box**, even on dark-themed decks, place the code
on a white rounded rectangle rather than recolouring it. The

not more. Avoid placing the code over template background art.

## 5. Test in the room

Scan the code from the actual screen in presenter view *and* from the back of the room
during setup. Screens introduce no special problem
(scanning off a monitor works fine),
but size and glare only reveal themselves in situ. Before that, sanity-check the file with
the [validator](/validate).

## Gotchas

- **Compress Media / Compress Pictures** on save can downsample PNG codes; SVG is immune.
- **Slide transitions and animations** on the code slide steal scanning time: leave the
  code static.
- **Exported PDFs of the deck** keep SVG codes sharp; screenshots of slides do not.
- **Presenter mirroring** occasionally letterboxes slides and shrinks the code below your
  planned size: check the actual projected image.
