# QR codes for a pop-up shop

> A pop-up's QR codes should outlive the pop-up: point every code at a domain you control so the poster someone photographs still works next month. Core kit: a catalogue code, a payment code, and one follow code, sized by scan distance: 2 cm at the counter, 5 cm or more on windows and A-frames.

## The defining constraint: the shop ends

A pop-up exists for a weekend or a season, but its QR codes escape into the world
(photographed posters, kept flyers, pocketed cards), and keep getting scanned after the
lease ends. That is not a problem; it is the point. The pop-up is a customer-acquisition
event, and the codes are how attention gathered in a physical place converts to a
relationship that survives it.

So the first rule is the [packaging permanence rule](/docs/ecommerce/qr-codes-on-product-packaging)
wearing a different hat: **every code points at your own domain**, at paths you will keep
alive (`yourbrand.com/shop`, `yourbrand.com/follow`), never a venue page, a Linktree
you might abandon, or a shortener. After teardown, those URLs keep working; you can
repoint what they show whenever you like. A scan in month three from someone's photo of
your window is a free second chance, unless the link died with the pop-up.

## The three-code kit

A pop-up needs surprisingly few codes, each with one job:

- **Catalogue**: the full range, including what the physical space could not hold, with
shipping. This is [endless aisle](/docs/ecommerce/qr-code-for-endless-aisle) logic in
temporary form: the pop-up shows the hero products, the code sells the rest.
- **Payment**, where card infrastructure is thin, a payment QR at the counter
(UPI, PIX, PayNow by region, the [market-stall page](/docs/ecommerce/qr-code-for-a-market-stall)
covers scheme choice). Even with a card reader, a backup payment code has saved many
  a pop-up during a terminal outage.
- **Follow**: one code, one destination: your mailing list beats any social channel
for actually reaching these people again. If social matters, pick the single channel
your content suits rather than a hub of six.

Resist adding more. Signage crowded with codes obeys the same
[one-action rule](/docs/ecommerce/qr-code-in-the-unboxing-experience) as insert cards.

## Sizing for temporary signage

Temporary retail lives on A-frames, window vinyl and counter cards, and each has its own
scan distance, apply the [10:1 rule](/docs/print/the-10-to-1-distance-rule):

| Surface | Typical scan distance | Minimum code size |
|---|---|---|
| Counter card / till | 20–30 cm | **2–3 cm** |
| Shelf and rail signs | 30–50 cm | **3–5 cm** |
| A-frame on the pavement | 1–1.5 m | **10–15 cm** |
| Window vinyl | 1–2 m | **10–20 cm**, full numbers on the [shop-window page](/docs/print/qr-code-size-for-a-shop-window) |

Windows add glare and dusk reflections: matt vinyl, dark modules on light, and test a
scan from the pavement at evening. Pavement signage is
[outdoor print](/docs/print/qr-codes-outdoors-durability) even for a fortnight: one rain
shower ruins an unlaminated A-frame insert. Check the maths with the
[size calculator](/size-calculator), and scan every sign from its real distance during
setup, before the doors open, not after.

## Measure the afterlife

Tag each placement distinctly with
[UTM parameters](/docs/how-to/how-to-add-utm-parameters-to-a-qr-code)
(`utm_content=window` vs `counter` vs `flyer`), and the pop-up produces a small, honest
dataset: which placement drove signups, what the space earned after it closed. The
[measurement page](/docs/ecommerce/measuring-offline-to-online-conversion) covers what
scans-to-sessions data can and cannot tell you. For a business deciding whether pop-ups
beat ads, the post-close scan tail is the number worth watching.

## FAQ

### What QR codes does a pop-up shop need?
Three: a catalogue code selling the full range with shipping, a payment code at the counter, and one follow code, ideally a mailing list. Each on its own clearly labelled sign, pointed at URLs on a domain you control.

### What happens to the QR codes after the pop-up closes?
They keep getting scanned, from photos, kept flyers and cards. Point codes at your own domain so those scans land somewhere useful for months afterwards, and repoint the pages rather than letting links die with the venue.

### How big should a QR code be in a pop-up window?
Size by distance at roughly one tenth of the scan distance: 10 to 20 cm for window vinyl read from the pavement, 10 to 15 cm on an A-frame, and 2 to 3 cm on counter cards. Matt materials avoid glare.

### How do I know which pop-up signage worked?
Give every placement its own UTM-tagged URL (window, counter, flyer), and compare sessions and signups per placement. The scan tail after closing is the best measure of what the pop-up permanently earned.
